This generation's been packed with heavy hitting games from top-tier developers. We've been on plenty of trips with Nathan Drake, courtesy of Naughty Dog. And we've saved both Ferelden and the galaxy because of the games Bioware have created. There's no doubt that this gen, developers have pushed themselves and the consoles to the max. But which developers have consistently delivered on hard-hitting, big name titles that kept us hooked until the very end?
#5 - Bethesda
Bethesda has been at the forefront of this generation since 2006, when Oblivion came out and wowed gamers across the globe. The sheer size of the game was impressive, let alone the number of things you could do in it. Many have said Oblivion was so far ahead of its time, it's still impressive, and does that ever hold true, even still today. They followed it up with the highly popular Fallout 3, again with a giant world for you to explore, except this time a wasteland filled with dangerous creatures and creepy places. The sequel to 2006's Oblivion, Skyrim, came out last year, and has had an amazing reception. Bethesda is easily standing the test of time, they continuously deliver amazing products that have a huge scope, and deliver in quality as well.
#4 - Valve
Valve brought themselves onto the scene this gen strong, with the release of The Orange Box, bringing gamers the amazing single player experience of Portal and Half-Life 2: Episode 2, and the amazing team-based FPS Team Fortress 2, which was amazing across all platforms, but easily the best on PC. Then came the epic zombie survival game Left 4 Dead, which spawned a huge fanbase, and a sequel a year later. Often regarded as one of the top zombie games, Left 4 Dead presented a fun, team-based, cooperative survival game. Valve have consistently delivered, whether it be with the fun, puzzle-based gameplay of the Portal series, or surviving the zombie outbreak in Left 4 Dead. Currently, Counter Strike: Global Offensive is looking to be an amazing game that will see release across PC, PS3, and 360, giving most next gen fans something to look forward to.
#3 - Bioware
As of late, this particular developer has been receiving plenty of critisism, but for most of this gen, they've been the premiere RPG developer, at least within the console community. Mass Effect blew onto the scene in 2007 and made a pretty strong impact with its original conversation wheel, and blend of third person action and RPG elements. The series continued through Mass Effect 2, which is often regarded as being the perfect blend of Third Person Action and RPG elements. Bioware doesn't leave it all in space, though. Dragon Age, and its sequel, both see players taking on an important role of either a warden to save the land from a blight, or to become the Champion Of Kirkwall. Though the most recent outing, Mass Effect 3, has received a substantial amount of backlash due to the ending, the fact is Bioware have made some amazing games this generation, and most, if not all, are thoroughly enjoyable and excessively fun to lose yourself in.
#2 - Naughty Dog
Naughty Dog's biggest accomplishment this gen is no doubt the Uncharted series. Featuring a likable protagonist, a fun gameplay structure, driving narrative, and in the latest two outings, some competitive, fun multiplayer. Uncharted has been called the reason to own a PS3, and rightfully so. If gamers want a cinematic game, Uncharted will likely be the first one mentioned. Huge set pieces, epic scale, and a driving plot are just some of the pieces that make up Uncharted. Naughty Dog doesn't leave it all at Uncharted, though. The Last Of Us, a third person survival game with horror elements will be coming out soon, and looks to shift the action-adventure focus of Uncharted to a more desperate survival situation. The game's getting a fair amount of attention already, and no doubt the expectations are set high, but given Naughty Dog's past, we're sure they can achieve it and possibly exceed it.
#1 - Rockstar
Whether you're racing across the barren landscapes of New Austin on horseback, jacking a car and driving off a sick jump in Liberty City, or shooting your way through Sao Paulo, Brazil in a bad Hawaiian shirt, Rockstar Games has consistently and consecutively delivered big name, hard hitting titles that deliver on every front. In scale, gameplay, multiplayer, story, all of their games feature unique settings, differing styles of gameplay, yet it's easy to transition from one to another. Grand Theft Auto IV was a massive success, giving the first real next gen outing by the company. Though some fans weren't pleased by the game's turn for realism, Red Dead Redemption, 2010's game of the year, pleased nearly every fan, Rockstar or not, with its accurate depiction of the dying wild west, and strong narrative that pushed you on, making you care about John Marston as if he were your best friend. And of course, the company didn't let up with Max Payne 3, which forces you into the solemn, depressing shoes of an aging Max Payne who takes what's supposed to be an easy job, but quickly goes bad and sends him spiraling into a pit of gunfire, painkillers, and betrayal. Complete with a fully fleshed out multiplayer, Max Payne 3 is a perfect example of another amazing title by Rockstar. Their constant delivery of not only consistently good titles, but consistently mind blowing titles, is what earns them the #1 spot for me. I love Bioware's Mass Effect series, easily my favorite of this gen, but Rockstar has delivered nothing but amazing games this generation, and I don't see that trend letting up as the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 approaches.
So, there we have it, my top 5 developers of this generation. Ranging from the epic world of Oblivion that Bethesda immersed us in, to hunting for treasure in the acclaimed Uncharted series by Naughty Dog, to stepping into the boots of John Marston as he tries to get his family back in Red Dead Redemtpion by Rockstar, it's no question that this gen has had some excellent games by excellent developers.
